While readers of ec-bp.org's newsletter are well acquainted with EDI and where it fits in their business, the world of small businesses that are not involved with manufacturing and retail distribution channels typically have no idea what EDI is, or what difference it makes in the world.
This article was produced as a case study of Rapala , a small company
that competes with much larger corporations, but has found a way to
compete and win, using EDI as leverage.

Over the last few weeks, I've heard a bit of rumbling about advanced uses of EDI data to deliver information in formats not usually associated with traditional EDI applications. Who knew that EDI could be useful for more than processing orders?

A few weeks ago, Marlow identified some issues with methods of constructing 850 documents for cross-docking. One of the companies he identified was Nordstrom. Debbie Nyquist, Nordstrom's EDI Coordinator responded with some helpful information.
