When there’s a lot going on, we often push the fundamentals aside and forget the basic skills that have been part of our success. Project management has been a central part of my own success from the beginning of my career. So, when I’m faced with new challenges or when I’m wondering why a project isn’t going as well as I’d like, I remember this acronym: IPEMC.

Common knowledge has it that if you were to move some or all of your IT efforts to the Cloud, your world would be as right as rain. Whether you agree with that premise or not, competitive pressures will eventually force you to move to the Cloud. That's just the way it is. Ok, fine, you say. But what is this Cloud, where does one find it, and aren't I already there since I’m using Software as a Service (SaaS) products? All fine questions, to be sure. The answers, however, are as easy to nail down as mist on a plank.

We live in a world where we are often pressured to take shortcuts to save time and cut costs as much as possible. However, if you’re not a skilled and experienced project manager, the wrong shortcut could end up costing you a lot more. Here’s an anecdote to think about:Let’s say you are running a project, and the goal is to upgrade a road to a remote property. You solicit bids from several contractors and ask them to do it for the least cost possible, and you also stipulate you don't want to get any permits.

Does every P.O. you send (or receive) travel directly between you and that of your trading partner? If you're using AS2, that's a given. But if you're using a VAN or other EDI service provider, there's a good possibility that every transaction you exchange with your TP is routed between two networks - the one you use, and the one your TP uses. Bill Alletzhauser, Acting Secretary for the Connectivity Caucus knows the problems this kind of interaction can make all too well, and after the organization's recent conference, is working with the participants to resolve them.
