Today, a little known company announced that its copyright, #4PR11F001S allows it to charge royalty on every EDI transaction generated anywhere in the world.
The chairman of the company, Mack Miday commented, "When we purchased the company assets in 2001, we didn't realize that we also purchased the copyright to the EDI specification. I guess we were just lucky to be digging through the old records and come across the documentation."
Mr. Miday's attorneys have issued a cease and desist order to all of what he terms "copyright violators," ordering them to immediately halt transacting business using EDI formatted data. "We have the right to collect both retrospective and prospective royalties on each of the billions of EDI transactions made over the last forty or so years. We appologize for the inconvenience our order has made, but we are within our rights." Reaction has been swift from the affected businesses. One major retailer stated, "This is a disaster for our customers who will now have to pay more for every product we sell." For his part, Mr. Miday concluded his interview saying, "Every company needs to understand its own assets. In any case, I don't think our initiative will actually amount to much. I've been hearing for so long that companies are switching from EDI to XML, that they must be ready to make the change by now." After all... it is April 1, 2008 By I. B. Fullinia |
