With the approach of traditionally the most scary holiday of the year, the economy and elections are providing plenty of fodder for fright. The rubber masks that have, in past years, included Freddy, Chucky, and various vampires, are being replaced this year with costumes of dollar bills, mortgages, and investment bonds. But the good news for those of us involved with EDI, is that while fewer goods and dollars may trade hands, the EDI transactions still must go through.

While the necessity to transact business may not mean that everyone's job in our sector is safe, it's a fair guess to believe that EDI staff have more secure jobs than project based tech staff. One of the obvious advantages of EDI is the scale it brings to the trading environment. In many organizations, the EDI staff count is in the single digits - even in the single employee realm. And whether there are 100,000 transactions or 100 transactions, the maintenance of the EDI "machine" still has to be done - every day.

So, in these days of layoffs and corporate collapses, with the exception of those companies that completely close up, EDI positions may be among the most secure. When you hand out those treats this weekend, remember that they got into those bowls courtesy of your fellow EDI professionals.

Craig Dunham - Trick or Treat - the "perfect Registered | 2008-11-11 11:45:30
I can concur - the rest of the world IS kind of scary right now - what with financial bailouts, failing companies, banking nightmares and the stock market unrest, let alone job markets and housing issues!!!

And yes, our EDI positions may be one of the most secure... And I'm also one of those "single person" EDI departments. We process about 4000 documents a month (not including the FA/997) and I've got about 500 active trading partners. So I'm fairly certain I'm fairly secure....

But another aspect of this post got Me to thinking about a blog I'd written on how "Trick or treating is the ULTIMATE supply chain". And your last comment in the above article reminded Me of that.

Think about how simple the concept of "Trick or Treat" is... you don a costume, go house to house, knock on the door and yell "TRICK OR TREAT!".. then you get stuff!

And our own EDI systems and concepts can mirror that concept - you don a costume (your EDI system/application/provider) and you knock on the door and say "TRICK OR TREAT" (sending a PO, for example) and you get something in return (an ASN, the FA, an Invoice, a shipment, whatever).

The simplicity or complexity of EDI - like trick or treating - is up to you. A simple costume (a sheet with some eye-holes - BOO! I'm a ghost!) or complex (multiple layers of clothing providing the look of Marie-Antoinette for example)... From home grown (again, that simple sheet or some old, dirty & torn clothing - Hobo!) or store bought (fancy "Captain Jack Sparrow" or "Marie-Antoinette")...

The similarities are ... scary.
